1) OK Computer/Kid A (tie) - both bowled me over with their brilliance and originality 2) The Bends - Still the best collection of songs to me 3) Hail to the Thief - Again, I am STILL finding new things to love on this album although it isn't as cohesive as the others 4) Amnesiac - Not what I generally reach for, but I still love it 5) In Rainbows - There are fully seven great songs on this album, but it doesn't have staying power for me. The only song I keep coming back to is Faust Arp. 6) Pablo Honey - It's ok, but I don't think they were yet comfortable in their own skin
Kid A is severely underrated. OK Computer is better as a whole but Kid A was just out of nowhere brilliance. I love that album because of the curveball it threw us.
I liked HTTT a lot but in the long run, I think In Rainbows is a better album. IN 10 years, when you reach for a radiohead album, it will be this, Kid A or OK Computer.
Oh yeah it's all opinions. I like to dig deeper in my music. That's why, for me, HTTT is a better album. But it's all subjective and that's what makes music so great!
I think that was their point (and the point with many scaled down short time span albums say under 45 minutes). They want to pack a punch and make a statement. I agree there are a # of their albums that have you exploring long after. It took me two years to get into Amnesiac! While this one doesn't leave you guessing - I'd suggest 20 years from now - more people will be talking about "In Rainbows" than the rest of their albums save "OK Computer". It doesn't mean it's better. Just my opinion.
That's kind of my point. I thought HTTT WAS getting back to the roots. There are more SONG songs on HTTT than on Kid A/Amnesiac but it still incorporates the rich layers and the songs reveal themselves over time with each listen. I hear new things in HTTT and hear it in new ways STILL. While In Rainbows is a great record and has some great songs, MY experience listening to it now (after many many listens) is the same as it was the first time I heard it. So I guess I agree that it leaves you wanting more.
Disagree. "In Rainbows" is the most mainstream sounding album they've had since "The Bends" but they are doing things sonically on this album that people today are still not touching. 15 Step, Nude, Arpeggi and alike still have that Radiohead experimentation albeit subtle. As for staying power - it will rank with OK Computer for the masses. Some die-hards probably want the continual experimentation of Kid A & Amnesiac but every band should have that "getting back to the roots" album. This thing clocks in at 42 minutes. It slaps you in the face and leaves you wanting more. Yeah - it's got plenty of staying power. I love all their albums but this one is better than HTTT.
Don't get me wrong, I love this album (well most of it -- All I Need sounds like it should be on a John Hughes soundtrack), but I don't think this is anywhere close to a return to form as some seem to think. I mean, in a sense, it is as it is the most straightforward album since The Bends. But OK Computer sounded like something I'd never heard before as did Kid A/Amnesiac. Even HttT is underrated in my opinion and is AS GOOD as In Rainbows. For me nothing on this has had the staying power of, say, A Wolf at the Door. But that's just like my opinion, man.
Easily agree with this being their best since OK Computer, but not sure I would put it on equal terms. Then again, I think I am the only person on f10 that didn't put OK in my All Time top 10, so my opinion may not be valid. ;)
