Probably the best songwriting effort of all time, if you consider lyrics, song structures and instrument layering. The rare album where every single second of it went exactly right.
Hip hop's peak. Take the well chosen jazz hooks, the understated samples, the wide-open confessional lyrics and a general sound that relaxes and excites at the same time and you've got the perfect album to play at any volume.
Something for everyone on this album. A wide variety of guitar rock with acoustic classics (Stockholm Syndrome) and warbling guitar noise rock tones (We're An American Band) that would make Sonic Youth cry. Never a dull moment.
Just about 25% of everyone I've ever met that loves playing stoner rock has admitted to falling in love with this album. If you like stun guitar and can't get into "If Only," "Mexicola," or "Regular John," then you might not be alive.
The Foo Fighters were at their best when Dave Grohl played all of the instruments and still hated everything. Not surprisingly, some of the best drum work I've ever heard him do.
Sonic Youth's perfect storm combining their noise rock style, punk roots and a need to make commercially viable music to make money. This was where they peaked as accessible musicians.
Naki Kyoku is the highlight, but this short album encapsulates everything Boris does perfectly. Epic guitar rants, Pink Floyd-style. Short punk riffs that would make the Melvins and Replacements proud. Even a 9 minute song of nothing but tube amps warming up and feeding back sounds good. Boris is on top of the guitar rock game right now.
What more can be said? Almost every idiot I know that owns a guitar has tried to copy these guitar tones and album vibe. The Electro-Harmonix company owes these these guys their fortune, since millions of kids worldwide have bought their pedals trying to mimic this one. And as much credit as Kevin Shields gets for the guitar work, the vocals are truly underrated.
Haha that's because there needs to be 842 lists to cover every possible combination of musical awesomeness, Coz. I don't think any of us have had to think this hard since the grievances - Assman in particular :)
