I LOVE Fiona Apple. I think she has an incredible voice, and the music is varied enough from song to song to stay interesting. "When the Pawn..." and "Tidal" are regular stops on my iPod.
In general, I dig women singers. That's probably why Tori gets such high marks from me. Other voices that stop me dead in my tracks are Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays) and Alison Krauss.
FYI ... I keep tinkering with this list. I can't promise I'm not going to change it a million times before I'm done.
I vote for Transatlanticism. I hope Death Cab's next album is as good as that. I very much enjoyed Plans too but overall, I find myself reaching for Transatlanticism more.
Steve - we disagree on Coldplay as well. When Rush of Blood came out, I was all over it and thought it was better. Then, with some distance, I realized Parachutes is better as it doesn't ever bog down.
I went back and forth with this list SO many times. I may be the biggest Tori fan among straight men, and I almost included "Under the Pink" as well, but I just like too many different bands to double-up in the top 10. Also, I have to admit I made this list in about 5 minutes when I should have debated things internally for a day or two. I was just too geeked about the site to not rush right in and get something posted. Look for more from me in the coming days/weeks. Again, great site!
Nice list there Mr. Haller. We only match up with 2 albums in our top 10 of all time. I knew you and Ms. Amos would come to a meeting of the minds at #1. A Rush of Blood to the Head is my favorite Coldplay album as well. Crash is my favorite DMB album too. Both are in my #10-20 range. I actually prefer "Plans" to "Transatlanticism" but love them both. DCFC's new album comes out early May - can't wait!
I'm one of those that think DMB peaked with Under the Table, so the Crash inclusion surprised me a little. But still, great picks all the same, Transatlanticism in particular.
