Here's some disagreement. I actually think Swallowed in the Sea is weak. It ends tremendously but the beginning stink.
You don't mention Square One and it's a really good tune to me. You don't mention Talk and that is one of my favorites.
I agree on the majority of the rest. It isn't solid top to bottom but has some real good tunes. The problem is that the sum of the parts is better than the whole. The album doesn't strike you in its entirety but there is great music interwoven.
OK, I've been listening to X&Y all morning. I think Coldplay is at their best when they sing the syrupy love ballads for the soccer moms. When they deviate from that formula, they just seem out of place. You're half right though, Steve, here are the songs I think are pretty good: what if, white shadows, fix you, speed of sound, message, hardest part, swallowed in the sea, til kingdom come. 8 out of 13 songs? Not bad. But overall, it's not as consistent throughout as parachutes.
betty - that's why X&Y isn't as good to me either. They haven't evolved. It appears they are going for it with a new direction on album # 4 due out in June. We'll see.
i actually really like Parachutes. A Rush of Blood wasn't as good, but it was a decent...ok, x&y isn't terrible, but it isn't very good either. i just think Coldplay has not grown at all and it's just the same song all over again, but with worse songwriting on each album (particularly x&y).
It was. The Johnny Cash tune was great. Speed of Sound & Fix You are two of their best. Again - there aren't many bands that can actually get airplay and have songs beaten to death. They have somehow done this and they get grief from the likes of us. It's still good music. X&Y is a very good album - just not as good as Parachutes or AROBTTH (which is actually my favorite and almost made my top 10 of all time).
It was a great year and with time - the albums look so much better. 2005 is the REALLY great year in my opinion. To give you an idea of my '05 list (top 5):
My Morning Jacket - "Z" Arcade Fire - "Funeral" Sufjan Stevens - "Illinois" Death Cab for Cutie - "Plans" Coldplay - "X&Y"
Dude, props to you... you're the first person to figure out how to create a 2006 list!! We pushed that list type out of the way because someone *cough* vin *cough* was convinced that, "2006 was so long ago, who the hell's gonna want to create a list like that?" That was a damn good year in music though, so I refused to take mine down.
Let's see who else can figure it out how to make their Favorite 10 Albums of 2006 list. (hint: you can do it from this page ;o)
