vin's Favorite 10 Albums of All Time
1.
Radiohead
There's not much I can say about OK Computer that hasn't been said already but it's gotta be the best album of all time. You can't even random shuffle this album, it must be listened to in its entirety from beginning to end. Radiohead comes very close with In Rainbows but they will never make an album better than OK Computer. You can't be a fan of music and not own this album.
2.
Pink Floyd
It was a very close race between Meddle and Wish You Were Here for my obligatory Pink Floyd slot. In the end, Wish You Were Here wins out because the guitar work on it is as beautiful as the work on Meddle and it doesn't have Seamus on it. Still, Meddle is a floyd album I'd highly recommend.
Overall Rank: 17
3.
Wilco
An album that went from dumped by their record company to overhyped, it's still not overrated. This is where Jeff Tweedy comes into his own as a songwriter. Jesus Etc is the best track on here and the most radio friendly (if that's possible) for Wilco but it's songs like Ashes of American Flags and Poor Places that make this album great.
4.
Son Volt
Trace is the album that got me into alt-country in the first place. (And lead me to Uncle Tupelo and then to Wilco.) If you've ever driven a lonely stretch of highway at night and played this album, you'll know why it's on my list. "Catching an all-night station somewhere in Louisiana/ It sounds like 1963, but for now it sounds like heaven"
Overall Rank: 28
5.
Ryan Adams
This is Ryan Adam's masterpiece. A perfect album that has no bad tracks on it unlike some of his recent releases. This "sad bastard" really comes through on Oh My Sweet Carolina, Damn Sam, and In My Time of Need.
Overall Rank: 49
Also appears on
6.
U2
Bono's recent political save the world bullshit makes almost every U2 album unlistenable for me (and I own all of them) but I still can pop The Unforgettable Fire in the CD player (yes, the CD player) and let it go. From beginning to end, this is a great great album. Bad and MLK are two of the best songs U2 has ever recorded.
Overall Rank: 39
7.
Nas
I can't even stomach rap music anymore -- take anything on the radio and compare it to this album and it's like comparing John Grisham to Richard Ford. An instant rap classic and one of the greatest albums of all time in any genre. Nas' debut has not been topped by anyone in rap music since.
Overall Rank: 422
This album only appears on this list
8.
Public Enemy
Another rap classic. Hearing Chuck D's voice over the Bomb Squad's production for the first time is amazing. I think most people will rank Fear of a Black Planet higher but I thought this album was more raw and consistent.
Overall Rank: 56
9.
The Cure
I love this album. Loved it as a teenager and still love it as an adult. almost 20 years later, this album still sounds as good as it did in high school. I love the urgency of the title track.

I also think Wish was a highly underrated Cure album and I had a hard time deciding which to put in.
Overall Rank: 42
10.
Smashing Pumpkins
What's interesting about this album is that it's phenomenal -- except for Today. Now, the question is, is Today actually a good track that I'm just sick of because it's on the radio all the time? Disarm is on the radio constantly as well but I still love that song. Btw - Drown from the Singles Soundtrack is a stellar SP song if you don't have it.

doc - i think as long as you're passionate about your STP and KennyG, go for it...... MILF-music.i'd.like.to.forget

ok vin. i listened to it a few times, but i'll give it a few more rotations. they were a part of a great wave of boston music w. dinosaur jr, morphine, lemonheads, the pixies, sebadoh, etc... a precursor to the chapel hill scene....and then seattle.

i remember buffalo tom when i was in college. amazing.......:>>>>

But Three Easy Pieces was actually a great album. It's not like they're Survivor or REO Speedwagon doing the Calneva casinos. It was a very welcome comeback and old Buffalo Tom fans got to be nostalgic yet get something new.

It certainly was better to me than Accelerate.

I think 'Let Me Come Over' is a great album with Taillights Fade, Larry, Porchlight, etc..., but it was sad to see them get together again. Bands only have a certain amount of shelf life. Janovitz's first album 'Lonesome Billy' was good and a bunch of us got to have dinner with him at the Tin Angel in Philly when he was touring for that record. Remember they used Sodajerk in a Nike commercial awhile back.

That sucks. Such a talented and underrated band from the 90's. Soda Jerk remains one of the best pop songs to emerge from the decade.

I have Up Here as well as Lonesome Billy and the collaboration album Fireworks on TV.

So I was on Bill Janovitz's mailing list for a long time. And he was selling real estate in Maine or New Hampshire or something. It was really f'ing sad. Especially since they were such a great band. No commercial success though.

Have you checked out his solo albums? I really dig em, especially Up Here. They're more folksy than rockin but I tend to also stop at Up Here when my itunes is on random and I play the whole album.

I love the new Buffalo Tom album. I think it's their best since Big Red Letter Day.

I see we also share a fondness for SON VOLT. I haven't been a huge fan of the newer albums since Farrar re-formed the band, but the first 3 SV albums are some of my favorites

Tomorrow the Green Grass really is a great album. I realize this is partly due to the breakup of the original band members and a lineup shuffle but they haven't even come close since. It also took me about a year before i truly appreciated that album.

I'd like you list a lot more if Tomorrow the Green Grass was on it. I've never been a big Radiohead of Wilco fan (well, I deplore Wilco), but I respect their inclusions. Can't beat Public Enemy though!

Dammit -- I finally had to give in and move Siamese Dream into my Top 10 of all time.
Posted by vin on Mar 11, 2008 08:38 AM
Yes. Siamese Dream really should be on here. But who would it replace? Nirvana? The Cure?
Posted by vin on Mar 08, 2008 12:46 PM
I still can't believe you have no Smashing Pumpkins on your list!

Disintegration is clearly their finest work. (Are you just bitter cause some boy turned you down for a dance to Lovesong at the Spring Fling?)

Considering that anyone can make a remake of a song as long as they pay royalties, we'll pretend that 311 never even heard the song. Much like Sheryl Crow should never have been allowed to remake Sweet Child O Mine and Madonna should never have been allowed to remake... well, to exist.
Updated by vin on Mar 06, 2008 08:38 PM
Of all the Cure albums, Disintegration? The one with Lovesong on it? The very song that 311 did a cover of? The mark of great music is that ANYONE can remake a song and it still sounds good. Bah!

I would like everybody to know that Vin changed my life when he introduced me to my love, Ryan Adams. It began six years ago with Heartbreaker. Oh and then, there was Radiohead. After much resistence on my part, he force-fed OK Computer while criticizing my initial disinterest as a lack of taste in quality music. Now they are one of my favorites.
I am forever changed in my musical interests and Vin is the reason...for the season.

I think Cliff Poncier would disagree: "Well, I think "Touch Me, I'm Dick," in essence, speaks for itself, you know. I think that, you know, that's basically what the song is, um... about... is about, you know... I-I think a lot of people might think it's actually about, you know,"My name is Dick, and, you know, you can touch me," but, I think, you know, it can be seen either way. "
Posted by vin on Feb 18, 2008 08:53 PM
FYI, Citizen Dick is not a band. Uhhhh, Singles. The band is Mudhoney and the song is "touch me, I'm sick".
Posted by toddolson on Feb 18, 2008 08:43 PM
Dood, we've got OK Computer, It Takes a Nation of Millions... and now Disintegration in common for our AAT lists. Guess you actually do have decent taste in music.
Posted by superflav on Feb 18, 2008 11:53 AM
Hahahah. I knew I'd get crap for counting crows. I did just recently update it to have Disintegration at 10. Still, AAEA is #11 and might make it back up to my top 10. That was a truly great album.

steve- counting crows had one stinker on their first two albums. Children in Bloom is a horrible song. AAEA had Ghost Train.

leif - Nirvana saved rock and roll by killing hair metal and deserve their place in history. I'm sure there were a bunch of good bands out of Seattle (I am partial to Citizen Dick and their stellar album "Touch me I'm Dick") but Nirvana broke through and saved us all from bullshit Poison, Motley Crue, Ratt, etc.
Updated by vin on Feb 13, 2008 09:07 AM
I dig Counting Crowes and most people list August & Everything After as their top album but I'm a "Recovering the Satellites" fan. Great, great album.

Good list Vin.

I can't believe you ripped me for RHCP whilst you have the Counting Crows in you're top 10. The rest of the list is pretty good. Although I don't really agree with Nirvana, yeah they were damn popular and it was good, there were many other equally good and even better bands to come out of Seattle during this time period.
Posted by leifdawg on Feb 11, 2008 06:34 PM
I have to say that the following albums NARROWLY missed my f10:

Tomorrow the Green Grass by the Jayhawks
Central Reservation by Beth Orton
I'm Wide Awake It's Morning by Bright Eyes
Blue Train by Coltrane
August and Everything After by Counting Crows

Also my list is missing a Rush album because it seems like they have too many great albums but not a single phenomenal album. I guess Moving Pictures is close to making my favorite 10 and also Fly By Night.
