Bon Iver
It's such a quiet album that it will take you some time to get into it. The hooks are subtle and everything about the album is sparse. While everyone is mixing their albums louder and louder, For Emma goes the opposite route. The cover of the album perfectly conveys what you're going to get inside. I love it. Favorite tracks so far: re:stacks, For Emma, Flume, Skinny Love.
3.
My Morning Jacket
This album confused me at first, especially the song Highly Suspicious which seems like it's a joke that belongs on the Flight of the Conchords album. But tracks 4 on to the end are phenomenal. Nothing too rambling on here, which I like. Standout tracks: Librarian, I'm Amazed, Sec Walkin', Look at You, Touch Me I'm going to Scream Part 2. Thank You Too. That's a strong strong lineup.
Overall Rank: 5
4.
Rush
Excellent mix of old and new songs. And with Rush you know that their live performance will be every bit as good as their studio work so essentially you have a greatest hits album with some extra adrenaline from the crowd once in a while.

Flight of the Conchords
You whisper something sexy like
Is that it?
I know what you're trying to say girl
You're trying to say awww yeah that's it

6.
Band of Horses
I am completely addicted to this album. I don't know why it took me two years to get into it despite recommendations from a few people. Love this band's sound and I think they're better than My Morning Jacket cause they don't wander too far off. Stand out tracks: I go to the barn..., St. Augustine, Funeral.

7.
Tift Merritt
I'm listening to way too much music that sounds like it might veer towards Country but this is an excellent album. Kathleen Edwards lead me to Tift Merritt. This isn't pop-country crap... it's too good for that. Another Country starts off VERY country but then settles into greatness.

Kathleen Edwards
It's rare that I buy music the day it comes out anymore but I immediately got Asking for Flowers. Just a couple times through and I can tell this album has surpassed the others, which were rather excellent. The title track is a great great song and there isn't a clunker in the whole album. Also, she will get way too much press for this but whenever you can drop Marty McSorley in a song... sweet

Okkervil River
This is a great great album. Start off with A Girl in Port and go from there. Although this is a very cohesive start to finish album. Never heard of this band until recently. I'm hooked. I can do without the Sloop John B lyrics at the end of John Allyn Smith Sails though. It's really kind of unnerving.

For some reason, Librarian is a standout track for me. I've always liked the MMJ songs that people don't like. Apparently, I wasn't supposed to like Lay Low... go figure.

Anyway, Highly Suspicious is really weird. It's like something out of the 80s. You can imagine Jim James in the middle with his band in the background (like the Queen video) and seeing them singing HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS. Just an odd odd track at #3.

Vin - those mellow ones in the middle are now growing on me. I kind of like Highly Suspicious although I understand how some dislike. It's almost like when you heard "Glorified G" from Pearl Jam. You were like "What?!" Anywho - my favorite tune right now is "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Part II"

It's funny Vin because my favorite tracks are different from yours yet we both enjoy For Emma so much. My 3 favs right now are Lump Sum, Blindsided & Creature Fear

Scott Weiland's masterful use of eyeliner implicated real talent. Maybe of being a drag queen. But that's still talent dammit. Now could he translate that fantastic makeup application ability to music? No. But the boy has skills.

Why are you guys cluttering up my list with comments about a hack band with no f'ing talent?
Posted by vin on Apr 03, 2008 07:23 PM
STP just isn't STP without a coked out Scott Weiland and his tube of Maybelline and terrible lyrics. Huzzah for a reunion!

Are you a STP fan? They are reuniting and they are going to tour. Aren't you excited ?

I am not hip at all. I am a corporate drone.

Do you have Band of Horses first album, Everything All The Time? It's better than cease to begin.

Also, the fuss around Radiohead is because they continue to innovate and produce music that doesn't sound like anything else out there. Check out the Bends. It's not as out there as the rest of their albums.

hey sweetie, thanks for the comment. i chose that one because it sounds exactly like this band i used to listen to in high school which was a long time ago. my ex-husband turned me onto it. you have a lot of radiohead on your list. besides pablo honey, i just don't understand what the fuss is all about. i'll listen to some suggestions from your list. you seem like a hip guy who knows his music. i need to find out if we can add a photo because i want to see what you look like. you probably have tattoos and a moohawk. thanks

Under the blacklight sometimes sounds a little too much like disco music but there are some quality tracks on there: silver lining, under the blacklight, angels hung around, and even breakin up (although i suggest turning the volume down in your office when listening to that or people might expect to see you on market street for the next pride parade).

Still warming up to Under the Blacklight. I listen to her solo album too much and can't move on.
