I know there is a relative backlash against these guys but this album really shows they are maturing as a band. This is definitely a "next step" album that I didn't think they had in them. Everyone who liked the first will not be let down by this one.
"What would I want? Sky" is one of the best tunes of the year. Sampling the Dead? these guys really push the envelope. Have to say they are the band of the year.
Tell me what is on the horizon for your most anticipated album of 2010. May is going to be insane with Arcade Fire, The National & LCD Soundsystem set for releases. To me, the National is the one I'm most amped for.
An odd moment of discovery for me. Beach House is a girl/guy duo. I always thought the guy was singing and then they premiered on Fallon on Friday. It's the chick singing!
For all you Bon Iver fans, Justin Vernon's side project called the Volcano Choir has released its first single. Pretty kick ass. You can download it for free here
Dirty Projectors is taking me a bit and as I peel off the layers, it keeps getting better. I have a feeling it will be #1 shortly. Phoenix is just a terrific, straight forward pop record. Wilco is going to take some time but I think with time - it will also rise to the top at some point.
I love the La Blogoteque videos as well as Sigur Ros so when the two come together - it's magic. What a great live performance video of Vid Spilum Endalaust. . .
glad to hear that you're finally on board with Animal Collective, steve. i don't know if the new album is their best, but it's certainly a terrific album.
if you like this album, you must, must, must download Panda Bear's (one of the guys in AC) Person Pitch. in my opinion, it's better than any AC album.
Moe - never really got into the sound that AC projects. I liked some MGMT and Deerhunter and could never stomach the previous AC but this one is just different. I like the Andrew Bird but it hasn't captivated me in the same way MPP has.
These guys are like the bane of my musical existence. By all estimations I SHOULD love them, but I don't. I have given them every chance, spending plenty of time with Feels, Strawberry Jam, MPP and even Person Pitch. But I just don't get it. This one is a bit better to my ears, but this fascination with an overly-drenched reverb sound thing has got be my biggest pet peeve of the so-called indie music scene.
Steve, you and I are going toe-to-toe recently. Ha! I like the good natured disagreements though!
IMO, Andrew Bird's Noble Best is much more deserving of a campaign as it is only currently on your list and mine.
Time for the f10 community to get on board with Animal Collective. I was big on the TVOTR campaign back in September and now it's time to turn the page and put AC at the top. If you haven't listened to Merriweather Post Pavillion - you're missing out.
FoTC - songs will be available on ITunes the day after the episode airs and a 15 track album is due at the end of the season. Tour will also hit North America.
One of my favorite lists/countdowns of the year is the WXPN fan voting. It sometimes gets taken over by the kids (i.e. '05 when Coldplay beat out MMJ's "Z") but normally it's a very respectable list AND they play each album in its entirety (imagine that on the radio!). Anywho - they are doing #10-6 today and the top 5 tomorrow.
#10 through 6 are:
10) Kathleen Edwards - Asking for Flowers 9) MGMT - Oracular Spectacular 8) Kings of Leon - Only By the Night 7) The Hold Steady - Stay Positive 6) Duffy - Rockferry
I'm waiting to hear David Bowie cover the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah song. That would be sweet. Or even Flight of the Conchords. Judging from his Extras guest spot, it would seem DB has a sense of humor.
Steve - did you get into the rest of Ryan Adam's catalog?
C'mon folks - you are coming around and we're dangerously close to getting "Dear Science" as #1 of the moment. I love "In Rainbows" but sort of looks odd to have an album that's over a year old as the "of the moment" representative of the site!
"BON IVER To Release New 12", Tours Through Winter, Performs On David Letterman Just in time for winter, BON IVER have announced a new 4 song 12"/cdep entitled Blood Bank. From the title track's remembrance of the winter warmth we seek, to the summer love tribute of b-side gem "Babys", Bon Iver's snow-blanketed harmonies live across the seasons. Still, there is a reverence for sabbatical, solitude and the winding down of time. As much as "For Emma, Forever Ago" is about the cold, the Blood Bank collection is about the warmth that gets you through it.
Blood Bank will be released in the US on 1/20/09 and in the UK on 1/19/09. If you can't wait until then, head out to one of the bands shows stretching through the end of December hitting the East coast and parts of the Midwest where they will be selling the vinyl version.
For a full list of tour dates, head HERE.
If "Blood Bank" wasn't exciting enough, Justin Vernon and friends will be meeting Jagjaguwar's home state hero, David Letterman on December 11th when they tape a performance for The Late Show to be aired on or around that day. If, in your delight about "Blood Bank", you glossed over the previous sentence, let me say it one more time: Bon Iver's performing on The Late Show With David Letterman! Uhhhhhh, you got any gum?"
For what it's worth, the reason Bon Iver's not in my top 10 of 2007 list is because I haven't made it yet. When I do, I can assure you it will be there. I can say enough about this album. One of the most original pieces of work I've heard in years.
Fair enough although I don't think everyone would agree since Bon Iver has been on the "moment" list now for months for many here. I'd have to imagine it would be a top 10 of '07 for most of those folks.
Well I guess it boils down to interpretation of the lists. When I first joined (not too long ago), I made my "Moment" list my favorite albums of the moment. In other words, albums that I would consider my "desert island" albums RIGHT NOW and left my "all time" list as ...well, something different (if interested, you can read my little explanation in my "All Time" list).
I have since changed my "moment" list to reflect the albums I am currently discovering. I think that list changes far more frequently and is of more use to the community. Perhaps I am alone in this interpretation, but my moment list will almost always contain albums that won't make my other lists. Right now, Bon Iver probably wouldn't make my top 20 list for '07.
QUESTION FOR THE F10 COMMUNITY - so if 23 of us have Bon Iver on our album of the moment list and it's #1 here - why wouldn't you put it in your best of '07 lists? Is it because you discovered it in '08 and don't feel you can put it in there or just didn't think of it?
I keep reliving the MMJ show from last week via the download of the show. I wish I wasn't as inebriated because listening back to it sounds even better than when I was there at first. It was a great festival atmosphere but they sound tremendous via the XPN webcast when normally a re-listen shows the imperfections.
I hear MMJ is one of those bands that are much better live than they represent on the album.
I have two tix to them at MSG on New Years Eve. Going up to NYC for NYE is insanity. If it was Radiohead, i'd do it in a heartbeat but I am deciding whether to sell my MMJ tickets... only 3 more months to decide.
stock, stock, stock, stock, stock. . . i actually bumped up Evil Urges after seeing them live. It's a whole different experience and it gives new depth to the tunes on Evil Urges. Even "Highly Suspicious" worked live. Sec Walkin' is such a good live tune as well.
Based on the track release on their site, the TV on the Radio is my most anticipated. I'm seeing Jenny Lewis at the ACL Fest in a couple of weeks and was really hoping ot hear her new one for a while before the show. :(
Fans of My Morning Jacket may have heard their homage to Erykah Badu's "Tyrone". Erykah appreciated the props so much - she joined them on stage for the song in Dallas. Great stuff:
Getting warmer. Hey - it's not anywhere close to deep, thought provoking music but as a pop record - it's solid.
The problem is that they have 2 different parts to every song and I usually end up liking half of the song. If you give credit for half of the song - then it adds up.
Example - Yes (Bad) - Chinese Sleep Chant (good), 42 (first half with "those who are dead" makes me puke - the 2nd half that is a total changeup is good.
So by my addition:
Cemeteries of London (1) 42 (.5) Chinese Sleep Chant (.5) Viva La Vida (1) Strawberry Swing (1) Death & All His Friends (1)
I get 5 (and the instrumental at the beginning is palatable)
I loved this show. It still doesn't stack up to when I saw them at the Tower in '06 when they were testing out the In Rainbows material. Setlist from the Tower (June 1st 2006):
1. You And Whose Army? 2. National Anthem 3. 2+2=5 4. Jigsaw Falling Into Place 5. 15 Step 6. Exit Music (for a film) 7. Kid A 8. Nude 9. Weird Fishes/Arpeggi 10. Street Spirit (fade out) 11. Pyramid Song 12. Myxomatosis 13. House of Cards 14. Spooks 15. Idioteque 16. Bangers and Mash 17. There There
First Encore 18. Airbag 19. No Surprises 20. Bodysnatchers 21. Everything In Its Right Place
Second Encore 22. 4 Minute Warning 23. Karma Police
I love their live performances of There There. How great is watching Jonny and Ed on the drums? Like Rogue Wave's drum circle but 10000x better.
The next Radiohead tour is going to be awesome as they will probably be performing new songs from their next album. See you at the Tower in 2009. How sick would that be?
Don't worry Stock - everyone knows I have better taste in music than Vin anyway!
I was on vacation and came back to Camden for the concert. What a show. Although a long intro - this youtube (make sure to watch the high quality version) really captures the show. I get goosebumps watching it.
Fleet Foxes performed "Blue Ridge Mountains" for Letterman two nights ago. It's their network TV debut. I have this archived on my DVR at home and have watched it over and over.
Sounds like Bob Dylan singing to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah with a little more synthesizer. Interesting sound. Wanted to see if anyone had feedback to push me over the edge to buy their debut.
It's not that I don't like to stand. I find that I end up standing at most shows. It's just that I like assigned seating. It keeps the riff raff from crowding me. :)
Actually - if you get to the venue early - there is plenty of seating at both the downstairs & upstairs bars at the TLA. I know you don't like to stand - that's why the First Unitarian Church for Bon Iver has me concerned for you bud.
Thanks for introducing me to Cold War Kids. (That was the answer to the question at Death Cab.) Good stuff. Looking forward to their new album but TLA? No thanks.
You'll have to tag that venue with f10 stickers for me.
Cold War Kids have posted a video with a clip of a new song and the announcement their new album comes out in September. Can't wait to hear their follow up to "Robbers & Cowards" (my top album of '06). Plus they will follow with a tour that hits Philly in October (tix on sale this Friday)
Fujiya & Miyagi's sophomore effort comes out 9/16 in the states. Really enjoyed their debut "Transparent Things" (any LCD Soundsytem fans would like these guys IMO)
lmao..no..i was wondering why he got escorted out (i didnt see the spilled beer)..i thought "damn..he gets pulled up by langhorne, then he got kicked out for it?"
the wife and i were all the way to the right of the stage on the floor. i had my beer on the stage most of the set.
steve - you gotta give Langhorne Slim more rotation time. I saw him at WXPN last night and he was excellent live. I didn't even realize this but he's from Langhorne, PA. He really needs to incorporate some Sesame Street songs into his live performances.
Also - you girl Adele is playing there next week. Love the venue.
yeah i knew that. but i dunno, i feel like such a douche saying "Bon eevair" in the french style. Like Miles saying "cwah-sahnt" instead of "kreh-sant" in Sideways. (Wow that was a left field detour.)
Can't quite have it top Bon Iver yet but MMJ continues to grow on me. I'm sure it will take the top spot for me here in the near future.
On a side note - did you know that Bon Iver is pronounced "Bon EE-vare"? Boy would I have sounded stupid pronouncing it. Luckily - everyone I've been telling about it has been through e-mail.
Man, this MMJ is phenomenal. I like this so much more than their previous offerings. I think because my problem with MMJ was that they tended to meander in songs. This album feels tighter. I can't wait till i can buy the CD.
Was on a plane yesterday and listened to it at 30,000 feet. It is really a different experience altogether. For such simple tones to be so damn expansive really created an awesome dynamic.
VFK - I would. I haven't enjoyed their music really since UP! There are a couple of tunes that will take you back to the 80's really (especially Until the Day is Done - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvWokFcD22E )
There are definitely some more rock tunes as well. They have their share of klunkers on it but overall - their best effort this decade.
Steve- my favorite KOL album is Aha Shake Heartbreak. I remember listening to it and thinking "what the hell is wrong with this guy's voice?" Then it grew on me cause it was different from most things out there.
I think "soft" is the best song from that album. It reminds me lyrically of Creep. (The radiohead song, not the TLC one).
Have to say Kings of Leon was very much like Arcade Fire in that upon first listen - wasn't sold on them. I put it down, took some time away and came back and now I am captivated. What a great album. Do any of you enjoy their earlier work? If so - which album?
Damn leif, what are you waiting for. Those are two of my favorite albums. Everything all the Time is great. I actually went and bought both yesterday at Best Buy.
I got Vampire Weekend but I haven't listened to it yet. I still need to get Stage Names and Everything All the Time. I love everything else on your list.
