betty's Favorite 10 Albums of All Time
1.
The Beatles
how the beatles didn't make so many of your lists is very surprising. we only get 10 albums to choose, so i'm only placing one beatles' album. this is my fav beatles album, but very close behind are Revolver, Rubber Soul & the White Album.
2.
John Coltrane
coltrane is god.
Overall Rank: 100
Also appears on
4.
The Rolling Stones
again, i am surprised not to see more Stones. for me (and i think it may be a general consensus amongst most Stones fans), there are four core albums -- this, Exile on Main Street, Let It Bleed and Beggar's Banquet -- and i just picked the one i'm most likely to listen to.
Overall Rank: 42
Also appears on
5.
David Bowie
i'm not the biggest Bowie fan, but this album changed my life as a teenager.
Overall Rank: 39
6.
The Flaming Lips
i had to put one optimistic band on my list, right?
Overall Rank: 100
Also appears on
7.
Pavement
the album that got me into indie, lo-fi rock.
Overall Rank: 73
Also appears on
8.
Bob Dylan
the most beautiful lyrics ever.
Overall Rank: 51
9.
Rahsaan Roland Kirk
after Coltrane, the greatest jazz improvisor of all time.
Overall Rank: 531
This album only appears on this list
10.
Arcade Fire
it was difficult for me to place this album since it's still kind of fresh and hasn't stood the test of time yet. however, i think i like it more every time i listen to it and i could listen to it everyday.

I don't even like the Beach Boys at all... until I was doing some research for this site and saw that Pet Sounds made every critics Top x of all time list. I had to figure out why. So I got it and it was phenomenal. I have been meaning to get Smile. Good suggestion... I'll track it down.

Vin, have you listened to the finished Smile? If you like Pet Sounds and the Beach Boys...

The Who are in my top 3 bands of all time and agree with Betty except Tommy deserves everything it gets IMO and do not sleep on The Who Sell Out, A Quick One and My Generation. I liked them more than the Stones mostly due to liking their versatility over the blues-domination.

If folks want to really understand The Doors, visit LA in sunny October with your lover, rent a nice convertible car, drive to the ocean, swim, then drive into the mountains as dusk begins and camp under the moonlight...listen to The Doors, Soft Parade, Morrison Hotel and LA Woman at max volume throughout the journey. Their music is timeless and becomes the rhythm of life.

Also, check out The Kinks and Small Faces---amazing.

i'm a Pet Sounds fan, but i think it is overrated. to me, though i like the music, 1/2 of it sounds dated. on the other hand, turn on Abbey Road and it sounds like it could have been released this year.

i agree with you that the Doors are completely overrrated as i can't stand them. and who overrated the Eagles? i think it is pretty much agreed upon in circles who actually know music that they are nothing but a nice pop band.

however, the Who are far from overrated and their music influenced many different genres of rock. i will say that i think Tommy is overrated and actually not nearly as good as their other records like Quadrophenia and Who's Next (overplayed, but far from overrated).

I know this is sheer blasphemy but I have a bunch of Beatles albums that I've unchecked in itunes. I realize their contribution to music and everything but I'd take Pet Sounds over any beatles album.

Also, I was thinking randomly today that the following bands are completely overrated: The Doors, The Eagles (the football team kicks ass though -- sometimes), and the Who. Yeah I said it.

Great list, Betty. I agree with you on the Beatles and the Stones. How can we overlook them? Perhaps the website should be Favorite100! Also like your jazz picks.

Somehow I forgot about Bowie.

Blue Train is a good album, but ranks lower than quite a few other Coltrane classics. i would rank the following higher: Giant Steps, My Favorite Things, Coltrane Plays the Blues, Coltrane's Sound (my 2nd fav Trane album), Africa/Brass, Ole Coltrane and Duke Ellington & John Coltrane.
