Still the most bought album of all time. Bashing MJ might be the vogue thing to do these days, but that doesn't change the fact that he influenced a generation of artists; probably 99% of hip-hop and R&B artists take cues from the King of Pop. He is arguably the greatest entertainer of all-time.
I can't believe I forgot the Velvet Underground, one of the seminal bands of the 60's. Lou Reed & Co. are to New York what The Grateful Dead are to San Francisco.
Picking my favorite Beatles albums was tough, because they are very uneven. Every album has some songs that I love and others that are just too cheesy for my taste. This album perhaps has the largest number of songs that I like. Although it's missing my favorite Beatles song, Here Comes the Sun.
The one word description of this album is simply, "wow". There are very few albums that don't have at least one or two misses. This is the exception to the rule. Each song is just a varying degree of greatness.
Sugar Ray....Sugar Ray? Seriously? Sugar Ray is a bunch of talentless pop stars. I admit that they aren't what they used to be, but top to bottom they are still one of the most talented rock bands around and still put out some good tunes. They've also really changed their genre a lot over the years. And Blood Sugar Sex Magic was their peak before they started going downhill.
Mother's Milk is my favorite and I agree with Leif on RHCP. Freaky Styley is awesome and, along with Fishbone, they are funk/rock royalty from that time period. Sugar Ray, lol.
Great call on Massive Attack and The Roots.
Kind Of Blue is my Miles favorite and Blood on the Tracks my Dylan, but like you say there are so many sides to those legends.
Bowie and Jimi are definitely in my top 20 with those 2 albums.
Have You listened to any of their albums before BSSM? Freaky Styley is a must for any George Clinton fan. Uplift of the Mofo Party Plan and Mother's Milk especially is very good as well. Their Self Titled debut is also pretty good although pretty rough.
Wait... anthony kiedis has a great voice? That's news to basically everyone. He's half the reason the chili peppers suck.
I was kidding about the comparison to Sugar Ray. The peppers aren't that bad. I just think they're supremely overrated. BSSM was ok... but why classic rock stations insist on playing californication is a mystery to me.
Are the Roots a philly band? or was that the Goats?
regarding the Chili Peppers, having technically great musicians doesn't necessarily mean they are a top band. your argument is seriously flawed because i could just name hundreds of jazz musicians who are amazingly good musicians (better than the majority of rock musicians) and say they deserve to make the list because of how well they play their instrument. i think the Chili Peppers have great musicianship, but i don't think their songwriting and innovation is up there with the best.
Yeah, pressure got to me. But like I said in my rave of the album; I really don't like any Beatles albums as a whole. Most of Paul's stuff is just too cheesy/poppy for me (at least in the sense of a top10 all-time).
As for the Chili Peppers, how are they overrated? They have probably the best slap bass player in the world in Flea, Kiedis has a great voice that is still going strong 20 years later, Smith is a damn good rock drummer and Fruciante(sp?) is a very good guitar player (although I don't really like his backup vocals).
i see the pressure got to you. you changed your Beatles album to something much more top ten worthy -- Revolver is a terrific album. and you changed your Chili Peppers, but i still think they are overrated.
also, i like Bitches Brew, but there is another Davis album from that period and sound that is often overlooked, but which i like better -- A Tribute to Jack Johnson.
the one beatles album you chose is Please Please Me? yikes, that's pretty far down there in the Beatles' canon. and that's not my opinion, that's just a fact.
and i have to agree with vin on the Chili Peppers, especially the fact that it's Stadium Selloutiam.
Vin's wrong about the Chili Peppers (well, at least the Chili's from back in the dizay), and I'm totally down with your list... other than the Stadium Arcadium selection. They should have called that album "Red Hot Whiny Peppers Make Music for Chicks!!"
No Protection, Odelay and Phrenology are right up there for me as well. I might need to rethink a few things.
