A beautifully balanced mix of the melodic and melancholic, electronic and acoustic. After 5 months (has it been that long?), IR continues to surprise and captivate with both its imagination and deceptive simplicity. From Pablo Honey to Hail to the Thief, elements of each album are felt here but they're more focused, more polished, and, somehow, even more beautiful. No other band can do that. -- flash
I came across Okkervil River very late last year, but their stripped down and sincere sound won me over instantly. Subsequently had to get my hands on the rest of their catalog. When I sat down to make this list, this was the first album that came to mind. This was not the best album of 2007, but I had been wanting for something with depth that wasn't overdone, and O.R. hit that nail on its head.
I will concede that this is the best album I listened to last year, musically. Reckoner still requires multiple listens every time I hear it, and just about every track resonates and satisfies. Radiohead's finest moment since OK Computer!, as others have said. The only reason Okkervil River ranks higher is that the sound of The Stage Names struck a deeper chord with me for some intangible reason.
